Mirantis named a Challenger in 2024 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Container Management

Mirantis has once again been chosen as one of a dozen companies dominating the global market for Container Management, alongside technology giants like AWS, Microsoft, and Google. We’re the only independent company to meet the stringent qualification criteria and make it into this year’s Gartner Magic Quadrant for Container Management. And we’re making progress: this year, Mirantis is ranked as a Challenger, recognizing our completeness of vision and ability to execute, versus our ranking last year as a Niche player.

Independence is important. Mirantis is not publicly traded or owned by a larger corporation, allowing us to put our customers’ needs first and give them the care and attention they need — rather than being pressured to appease shareholders or a parent company. Unlike other companies included in the Gartner Magic Quadrant, we are not a public cloud provider or telco/tech giant, and we do not sell a cloud native stack built around our own Linux distribution.

Mirantis earned our place as a Challenger in the Gartner Magic Quadrant by delivering vendor-neutral enterprise container solutions backed by industry-leading SLAs and the highest levels of services expertise. Indeed, Gartner identified the Mirantis “track record for supporting enterprise IT infrastructure requirements spanning the last two decades” as one of our main strengths.

Edge computing strength with k0s

With 20% of large enterprises expected to deploy an edge management and orchestration solution in the next three years1, Gartner also called out edge computing as a strength for Mirantis, giving special recognition to the k0s project, maintained by Mirantis. The report recognized the lightweight open source Kubernetes distribution for serving the needs of telecommunications companies and other edge users.

Gartner highlighted k0s for its innovation in supporting a broad range of processors (spanning x86-64, ARM64, and ARMv7 CPUs and NVIDIA GPU with nvidia-container-runtime). In the Gartner Critical Capabilities for Container Management report, also published this week, analysts also lauded k0s for supporting a wide variety of container runtimes, (including notably gVisor and WASMtime) and recognized Mirantis enterprise support for k0s, noting our fast CVE fixes, which we deliver within three business days after a CVE is disclosed.

As Mirantis recently made k0smotron generally available, both Gartner reports also gave a nod to the open source multi-control plane manager for the first time.

Developer focus and hybrid multi-cloud

Once again, the Gartner Magic Quadrant highlighted Mirantis’ focus on developers as one of our primary strengths. The report made special mention of our contributions to cloud native developer productivity tools, including Lens Kubernetes IDE, and Lagoon, a developer-centric application delivery platform built by Mirantis subsidiary amazee.io.

The Critical Capabilities report also commended Mirantis’ data center cloud infrastructure capabilities in Mirantis Container Cloud, the platform that underlies Mirantis OpenStack for Kubernetes and integrates Mirantis Kubernetes Engine. The report highlighted the Mirantis Container Cloud product architecture for unifying infrastructure deployments across both private and public clouds, and for providing a foundation for provisioning both virtual machines and containers.

Serious growth in production container deployments

Shifting focus to our momentum: in the last 12 months, the number of Mirantis customer production deployments has grown from 400,000 to 500,000 container nodes, with 70% running Mirantis Kubernetes Engine, and the remainder running Mirantis Container Runtime, Mirantis Secure Registry or k0s. We also have over 1.5 million users of Lens, the world’s most popular Kubernetes IDE, that provides a context-aware UI for efficient cluster monitoring and troubleshooting and removes complexity for cloud native developers. Of the Fortune 100, one-third are Mirantis’ customers. To service our customers, we employ a follow-the-sun model over 15 countries – meaning we are always there to serve you, and we get high marks in this area.

Mirantis prides itself on always being available and ready to support our customers, to enable them to be successful with their cloud native journeys, and in being able to rapidly assess and provide solutions to our customers’ needs. As an independent company specializing in open source technologies, we can be nimbler, more creative, and more attentive to our customers than other vendors in our industry that are burdened by rigid processes or are trying to push a product portfolio built around their own Linux distribution.

This flexibility and agility, combined with our incredible and proven customer support is why our customers continue to trust and grow with us.
